Like all radio shacks, some people prefer a small basic setup, some prefer a setup similar to NASA. I started off with a second-hand Icom 706, a CB antenna (IMAX 2000) which has served me well for close to 30 years. This setup served me well for a while, eventually as I saved money to invest in the hobby I was able to purchase a second-hand Yaesu FT89D and eventually an Icom IC7300 and several handheld cheap Chinese radios. The HT's can be seen below, no additional information required... all are cheap, all are UHF and VHF and the Radioddity even does DMR... if I can ever figure it out.
From Left to Right: Quansheng UV-K5, Quansheng UV-2, Radioddity GD-77 running Open GD Firmware and Baofeng UV-9RPLUS
Pictured below are 2 older handhelds I acquired many years ago, an ICOM IC-2SE and an ALINCO DJ-F1
Both radios work despite being of the vintage variety with the Icom manufactured in 1989 and the Alinco DJ-F1 (date unknown). Click the links above to view more information on RIGPIX.
